HillmanTok University: How One TikTok Class Became a Movement

It started with a simple TikTok. Five days ago, Dr. Barlow, a professor of African American Studies, posted a video introducing her students to her Intro to African American Studies class. Her goal was to engage her enrolled students in a creative and modern way. But the video's impact went far beyond her classroom.

Viewers who weren't even enrolled in her class were captivated by her teaching and eager to participate. They started following along, asking questions, and expressing their desire to learn. Most participants have been inspired to to participate by the fictional Hillman College from "A Different World," TikTok users dubbed this unexpected phenomenon "HillmanTok University."

Enrollment is simple: follow the links provided by instructors on their TikTok profiles. All courses are free, made possible by TikTok’s Creator Fund, which compensates instructors for the engagement their videos generate.
